I installed this and 8000 miles later it shattered the rear section of my front fender (where is is atttached) It did this while moving 75 miles per hour on a smooth freeway. You can read about several people who have expereinced this same problem with various fender extensions from different manufacturers. My suggestion is that if you install it you add more reinforcement to the cheesy plastic fender and extender. To replace the fender is 167.00!!! (or more depending on the color of your bike) On one post a guy suggested painting truck bed liner on the inside of the fender to reinforce it. I think the harsh front suspension of the GL1800 attributed to the failure of the plastic. If you install it keep a close eye for cracks before you destroy the fender :-(

This extension looks good on the bike and it was not that difficult to install. I could see a huge difference on the amount of road grime on the timing cover and lower cowl on the first ride compared to the amount there would be prior to installing it. I anticipate it helping in the rain also. As far as the plastic construction of the part is concerned, the rest of the fender is plastic, so I doubt it will be a problem. I'm satisfied with the fit, finnish, appearance and function.

I put this on about a month ago and I'm glad I did. It saves the front cowl and timing cover from getting the brundt of the road grime. Instructions could be better. I too did not install the brace brackets. To this day no problems. Quality appears good. Will see how long it lasts with it only being plastic.

Instructions have a mistake in them. They call for a 23/63" bit at the top, which of course doesn't exist and then in the instructions body they say drill to 5/16". Do they not read what they send out? Fit around side curves was sloppy but not overly visible. Suggest using masking tape on fender/extension adjoining edges to prevent scratching when assembling. Otherwise it will do the job.

Not impressed. more show chrome crap that is way too hard to install unless you have a complete workshop. some of us are not that lucky.

I went from a short extension to a long one that was as wide as the side of the fender (which eventually cracked the plastic fender) to this one. I did not want to deal with tapping threads for the additional braces so I just installed it with the 3 basic screws and no braces. Have had it for 2 years, no problems. Love it.

I have had mine on since sping 07. I picked this one cause I like the longer and more uniform look to the fender. Had to study the instructions for a while to make sure not to screw up--everything went together fine. You need it to save your lower cowl from getting trashed

Reading the directions at first seam a bit compliacted (could use better illustrations)once the fender is removed it becomes very evident as to what needs done. Fender was installed in 20 minutes. Hardest part was tapping the insert. (the inster is held in by one pop rivet)
Fender looks great like factory installation

I finally got around to installing this after having the lower chrome cowl on for a couple months (and a trip to Colorado). Big mistake! WithOUT the protection of this longer fender extension my lower chrome cowl looked like it was sand blasted behind the wheel!! My delay was due in part to the M6 tap that is necessary to install this fender. It is needed to tap the remaining 1/8" of two rivnuts used to hold the rear lower fender on. Once installed correctly, this is a smart looking and firm addition to the style and protective effect of the lower front fender. It doesn't have much clearence between the tire and fender but it is sufficient NOT to have caused any problems. I cannot speak for the others but mine has given me no problems whatsoever! Looks real sharp!

Mine came as bolt on...NO stick on, so I presume 2 different manufacturers involved here? Instructions ok although the template definately did NOT place side drill holes in the fender correctly. Be warned...do not drill unless sure of correct fitment position!M6 tap is required. Other than that great looking.I HOPE MINE STAYS INTACT!

Highly recommended if you have the chrome lower cowl andtiming cover. Installation takes some time but the installation instructions are comprehensive.

I just installed this extension on my new 06 Goldwing. It lasted two days for a total of 25 miles riding. I heard a large bump, and discovered it had sheared off from it's mounting location and broke off the lower half of my rear front fender. I took painstaking time to install it and it was a sanitary install, although the fender did not match the contour perfectly as it should have. I am very disappointed in this product and would never recommend it to anyone. I have never had a product that caused damage to my bike. Now I have to replace the fender, and maybe pay for another extension!!! Do not put this on your Goldwing. If there was a rating lower than one star, I would have checked it!

Hi,
I have a 2004 GL1800 in which I installed these when bike was new. Within 200 miles the caliper covers cracked (both sides). I fixed the cracks inside with JB weld. This year (2007)I decided to replace the caliper covers, upon removal the lower tab on the fender itself had broke off. I installed the mud flap carefully and "did not" over tighten the bolts and yes I have the re-enforcement bars mounted on the back side of my fender.
I "Highly reccomend you "NOT" to use these or any other extra long mud flap extensions. The weight and vibration ended up costing me $220.00 for a new fender (back half only) and another $35.00 for a shorter mud flap.

This is a great add-on, the long extension really keeps dirt, road gunk etc from messing up the cowl and underside (I don't have a belly pan yet). I prefer this design to ones that fit over the fender, looks cleaner with the overlap under the stock fender. Mounting wasn't that big a deal, of course I'm an engineer so I like doing this kind of thing. All hardware was correct and good quality, extension is thick enough to maintain reasonable stiffness, extremely detailed instructions, instl went smoothly.
Came with stick-on/bolt-on internal fender side stiffeners, presumably because this is also a big air scoop, considering its size. Once stuck, you CANT get them off by hand. Make sure to adhere to the cure temperature, this is one part you don't want to come unglued. Took a bit of tweaking the job in the sheet metal stiffener to fit just right, again not a big deal.
Overall a good looking, practical addon- a solid 5 stars. I definitely recommend these to anyone tired of scrubbing the underside of your Wing.

As with other reviewers it's a bit dificult to install and you must remove all the triming on the front end then you have the retapping of the threads and after it's all done your like all that just for a little extention. But that will all change after your first wet reide and your lower cowl isn't nearly as dirty as without, and no more road tar. Then you don't mind nearly as much especially if you have the chrome cowl it really pulls it all together

Look good - craeful with installation.
This extension looks realy good, however pay attention to how tight you go with the screws through the plastic fendor. It is very easy to crack. I know now.

Looks great. Works great.
But this particular model is just too long. A particularly large speed bump or those hateful raised tank fill spouts in gas station parking lots can catch on the extension and break the fender. Take from someone who has been there.
A new fender section is $215, by the way.
Go for the shorter designs!

Really accents the front fender. Keeps dirt and dust off of front cowl area. Must spend a little time and effort to properly install extension with its braces. Worth the effort.

Looks great and really keeps the chrome cowl clean by doing just what it was designed to do. Install took a few more minutes than normal for this weekend do-it-your-selfer, but I'm VERY happy with the end product!
