Follow-up
This is a great product as I stated in my 04/18/08 review. However, now that I have the bike back from having it converted to a trike, my wife says that the metal hinge has a tendency to catch on her slacks/leathers.
If I would have thought more about this item prior to the final purchase, I think I would have gone with a backrest similar to item AO18673816K.

Obviously the Staff never rode as a passenger with this product installed. My wife won't ride with me with it installed. Initially the backrest was too vertical and was more of a bother. I got mad at it one day and really pushed back on it and bent it to a more comfortable postition. I'll probably sell it and try another rest.

Works well for solo riding. The side rails rub the passengers legs, but it is removed easily for 2 up riding. I have noticed some rust stains recently on the side brackets.

It appears to me that the K products are overpriced and quality is ultimately lacking. I had the same issues as othr reviewers - bars bother the passenger, mounting "wheel" comes appart quickly and no longer turns as designed, pulling it off will scratch the mounts unless you are willing to pull the bike over trying to pry them away from the mount. Chrome coverage is on visual side only and not so much on sides less visible. This to me makes it even more obvious that someone is cutting corners, or trying too. Have it for a few weeks, will sell...

This is a real nice addition to my Wing, both in style and comfort. It's a little difficult to remove but I'm over all satisfied with it and it makes the long rides a little more comfortable.

Follow up review after a few months.
The mechanism for removing and locking in the backrest is miserable at best. It failed and I had to remove the nut that I thought was holding on the locking flange, but after removal of the nut, the flange stayed in place. Great, now I can't get the backrest off. I was final able to turn the locking mech. after prying it out a little bit. On the other side, the mechanism just spins around completely with no stops. I have to say, as time goes on, I become less satified with the more expensive Kuryakyn products.

This is a very easy and quick install. It helps my back and improves the comfort of the ride. I did have to change the way I mount the bike but that is getting easier with time. I would recommend this item.

Great for riding solo. However can't figure out the "easy on/easy off". Can anyone assist with this problem?

I can only endorse what Tom & Doc have said. Great for the driver; can be annoying to the passenger. A must have for riding solo. The heavy chrome mounts are definitely a big plus.

Great backrest. I feel great after a ride having the support on the back. I have it adjusted to the middle setting and still the wife has plenty of room in the back. Installation is a little tricky. Take your time so you do not mess up the paint job. Cover the painted surfaces of the bike before installing.

This does the impossible, makes a Goldwing more comfortable!! I like the easy off/on because I can quickly remove it when my Lady rides or put it back on when solo. I don't have to remove it for her but I like her on my back a little bit better ;)(most of the time) I also like that it has 3 adjustments forward and back.

Good product. Works for me in first position and I'm 5'11" and 220 lbs.
4 stars because it's pretty pricey. OTOH - I just made a 1,600 trip and couldn't have ridden it w/o the backrest!

I like the backrest... it fits me well in the center position, and hits just right on my back... The wife, however, isn't as complimentary of this accessory... if she puts her feet up on the high point of the transformer boards, it is comfortable... but when she moves them down to the standard board height, the frame of the backrest rubs on her inner thighs and is very uncomfortable... Glad I have the transformer boards, or I would have to toss the backrest... As it is, I'm looking for something different that won't cause her discomfort.

Not bad, but not good either. It probably works OK if you happen to be one of the three sizes of people it is made for. Too limited on adjustability for this money. Yeah, you can bend it but should you have to bend something this expensive? Easy to install, wore well with weather but if you can't emotionally handle cutting your seat, see a shrink; you'll be happier. UNLESS you are sized for one of the three positions.
