I'd pay the $30 to have them installed.....
Not difficult once you see one done, but if you're cutting on a $400 helmet you really don't want to screw it up.
I rode over to a friend's house to look at his installation. I made the cut and routed out the ear speaker holes with a dremel tool and it works fine.
Formerly I'd used a $30 pair of IMC ear speakers that sounded just fine to me.
I went with this set because it was highly recommended for the microphoneuse with the CB. Otherwise I's just stay with the $30 speakers and buy a $20 5 pin to 3.5 inch stereo adapter.
My friend also placed a bit of dielectric grease in the 5 pin connector and in the connector to the helmet.
He also told me to always use the whole cord with my helmet if I ever switched bikes with someone. He'd switched gl1800's with a friend, but the friend had a different helmet and when he plugged in his helmet to his friend's bottom half of the cord it destroyed one of the pins and cost $50 to replace.

I have paid a small fortune in headsets. And for quality of sound, no hiss and very little highway interference these are the BEST on the market. They now have bluetooth connectors as well. But for $30 I sent all three helemts to J&M and had them do the install. Not that they are difficult but they make a professional fit for your particular helmet. The first one I tried the headsets stuck out enough to hurt my ears. J&M told me that for my helmet they had thinner speakers. It's worth it to have J&M do it for your especially with modular helmets.

I bought the 584's for my wife and I and we had Wingstuff install them is our new Nolan helmets. These are superior head sets, well worth the money.

I had no problem what so ever doing the installation myself. The bass and overall sound is a far better quality than the "Air Rider" headset I had in my helmet previously. I am very happy with the headset. The lower cord had some trouble staying plugged into the bike because the rubber boot is tight and doesn't slip over the bike connection all that good until it wears in a little.

I have one Nolan ncom and one Nolan without ncom. After careful installation that did not match the instructions exactly (speakers mounted slightly closer to the ear and a small cut in the helmet's flashing to mount the cord clamp), I have to say that this headset is far superior to the Hondaline headsets (which this replaces) and the fairing speakers. If you have the ncom, this is not the headset for you; there is one specifically for the ncom helmet that is easier to install. If you like hi-fi, these should satisfy you. The bass response is quite enjoyable; it's spectacular for a small speaker mounted in a helmet. J&M did it right; kudos to them, and to Wingstuff for carrying them. Oh yeah... the mic is superior to the Hondaline at cutting out wind noise, but one must consider the environment in which we use these; some wind noise and background intercom hiss is part of the equation.

Should have sent my helmets to the factory for installation. The sound is very disappointing, no bass unless they are pressed into your ears. Wind noise from the passenger mic distorts the music levels.

Great headset. Mounting does make a difference in the sound quality. Take the time to fit them properly. The FL style does work great on the 3/4 helmet (open face) helmet as well (my wife's). Be carefull with the wires and plugs for the speakers and mike as they are a bit delicate.

Started out with these, but was afraid of the cutting into the helmet part. Went with the chatterbox version, but due to my large head and big ears I could not get a comfy fit. Came BACK to these, sent to J&M for factory installation (because I'm afraid to cut my helmet and mess it up) and REALLY glad I did. The factory mounting insets the ear-piece into the helmet and I don't even know they are there! The sound rivals High Quality home headphones!!

These have great sound, but the mic constantly turns over and I ended up with a short in mine so I could not transmit. I went back to the old bullet proof model.

I wish the could come up with a different way of attaching them. I had a tough time with the clamp but as for the sound I think they are great.

The quaility of sound is pretty good with these headsets, the issue I have is the clamp on the side of the helmet that can actually restrict turning your head while on the bike. I like the Air Rider system much better. These are well built and will last a long time though.
