I'm back with an update on this volume controller. Mine arrived on May 30, 2007. After the hair dryer "fix" to get the volume controller to fit the lower cord of my EdSets Sonic Boomer headsets (see my prior post) it worked like a charm for about three months (with very limited use). It's now destined for the garbage can. My wife's microphone doesn't work at all if her lower cord is plugged into the volume controller, but works fine if she removes the volume controller and plugs her lower cord directly into the OEM connector on the back of the bike. That suggests to me that the problem lies with the volume controller unit. For $57 you'd like to think it would hold up for more than three months of very limited use.

If only this had been more carefully designed! Great idea but rotten execution. Ours lasted about 6 days! Firstly is the problem with my wife getting it to fit. Drove her nuts. Then the position is difficult to easily see what you are doing in making an adjustment - the cord is too short. But the worst thing that finally killed it was that it fell off onto the road when she got off late one evening. We found it on the road next morning smashed into little bits by the next car into the driveway.

The whole thing needs to be more carefully designed so that it fits easily, is longer with the controller closer to the pillion, and is completely secure so it doesn't fall off.

I feel compelled to modify/update my 1-star review of this in-line volume controller. I spoke with a Big Bike Parts technician who was aware of the "won't fit" problem with the lower cords of some headsets. He suggested a simple "fix" -- heat the plastic overmold on the female connector to the volume controller with a hair dryer to soften it up a bit, then try to connect the male end of my lower cable. He said that after doing this a couple times over a period of a couple days the plastic overmold would stretch out and my lower cable should slide in. I did that and my lower cable now fits in the volume controller. He also suggested putting a very small amount of vasoline on the inside rim of the female connector to the volume controller to allow the male end of my lower cable to slide in more easily.

Bottom line: The hair dryer "fix" worked like a charm. I passed this along to Ed Davis at EdSets in case another customer calls him about this issue/problem.

Although I've solved the connection problem, I haven't yet had an opportunity to try out the volume controller with my wife/passenger on the road. I'll post another update after I have the opportunity to do that.
