Honda Goldwing Motorcycle Best Touring Bike in 2006

Cycle World Magazine:  After the BMW was awarded this twice before, the Honda Goldwing motorcycle is back on top as the worlds Best Touring Motorcycle of 2006.  The Honda Goldwing has been awarded the honor for the 16th time since it's world release of the GL1000 Goldwing in 1975.  Now two decades later, it's still the worlds best touring motorcycle with the state of the art GL1800 Honda Goldwing.

Whats Different on the 2006 GL1800 Honda Goldwing

Mechanically, not much, it's the same powerplant as 2001-2005 GL1800 Honda Goldwing motorcycle.  The 2006 GL1800 however, incorporates intergrated GPS Navigation, Heated Grips, Seat & Passenger Backrest, Air Bag System, New Audio System and even a Heated Seat.  Now thats the way to go, seems Honda really is listening to what Honda Goldwing motorcycle riders want.  Honda engineers have always been able to bring the worlds latest technology into their own products and deliver them to consumers.

Honda Goldwing Motorcycle Passenger Comfort

Honda realized how important passenger comfort and appeal was in the buying decision of the GL1800 Goldwing.  Yes, the Honda Goldwing is unlike many other motorcycles sold in the world today, the bike is as much designed around passenger as well as the needs of the rider.  That smart way of thinking has kept the Goldwing ahead of the competition since the beginning.  Honda realized passenger comfort was something very important if they were to stay on top of the touring market.  Imagine buying a house and the kitchen was too small and the house lacked enough windows, but had a 4 car heated garage that has the husband ready to make an offer, pack it up and leave, that real estate agent doesn't have a chance if his wife isn't happy as well.  This is where the Honda Goldwing is at i'ts best, designed for the needs of both riders, not just one.

Honda Goldwing Overview

Awarding the Honda Goldwing motorcycle Best Touring Motorcycle of 2006 is no surprise here at Wingstuff.com.  Honda has proven they can make the best even better with each model change.  In the world today, the Honda Goldwing has become more than just a motorcycle, Goldwing riding has become a lifestyle.  Most importantly, something that both a husband and wife can really enjoy together.  The word together is a powerful word, that is what the Honda Goldwing has done for motorcycle riders around the world, bringing people together, thru events, clubs and enjoying the open road in comfort, while offering the latest safety features, technology, superb handling and enjoyment.  Ride On...

My wife bought my 2002 Goldwing for a retirement gift when I retired from the military after 20 years. The only thing she would like to see changed is the width of the passenger seating area. I would like to see running boards and a compass added as standard equipment. I love the bike!!

The navigation system has a compass arrow indicating north on it presently. The bike has everything I need on it... after I added the 6-disc CD player and CB radio that is.

Honda would do well to consider adding a 6th gear to their GL 1800 transmissions. If Harley Davidson can do it on their new Touring bikes, Honda should be able to do the same. With the price of gas, having a 6th gear would be highly welcomed. Dropping the RPM's by at least 500-800 RPMs, should improve gas mileage so that 42-45 mpg is the norm and not the exception. Not all GL-1800 owners pull trailers. For those that do, there still is a 4th or 5th gear available for cruising.

Compass - Agree that a compass display would be a welcome feature)

Floorboards -- not everyone likes them and we are all different body types, so I doubt this will ever become standard.

Tire monitors -- what else do you want it to do for you? These systems are available but they are expensive and they cause you to spend more money when you have to get a tire changed, thus in the end you spend a ton of money so you know what your tire pressure is. Will never be standard. (We hope)

Trunk / Bag Lights - AGREE (The trunk light in my car is standard)

LED Lighting -- AGREE (But there are a few drawbacks to led's still)

6th Gear, or true overdrive would be a VERY welcome change!

CB Radio should be standard for all US models

Front brake rotor covers should also be standard.

The above are my personal oppinions and are not in any way connected to Honda or wingstuff.com.

The gwing windshield adjustment procedure is a joke. How about copying the big bimmer?

And please get rid of that alternator whine (or beef up the exhaust note).

I am not too good in cars or motorcycles and i where to buy one, i would ask an specialist to list me the advantages and disadvantages for each model. For now i am not in rush...so until i buy one maybe i will not need the specialist anymore.<a href="http://www.duvelusa.net/dvlus/WIkK/1.php

My thoughts (please listen Aoki)
o compass -- good idea and doesn't cost much or weigh anything
o driver floorboards -- make it an option. I don't like them but know many do
o make CB and CD and option. I don't use these and don't want to pay for it.
o however, an iPod cradle is essential and is a lot cheaper and weighs less than CB/CD
o make all the reflectors lit. These were options on GL1500, which I bought happily. Don't add ugly lights, but having extra lights along side and in back are important
o no brake rotor covers. adds weight, is ugly, makes cleaning more work
o the change from GL1500 to GL1800 (less bodywork) was welcome. Keep the trend going.
o no motorized windshield. Come on! How often do you adjust the windshield? And get rid of the vent in the windshield. It just makes cleaning and polishing hard and gets in the way. If you want a breeze, look over the windshield. If you prefer to look through the windshield, you don't want a vent in your way.
o the BIG SUGGESTION! Go diesel. The new diesel fuel standards will permit a clean diesel wing with great torque and will likely return 50-52 mpg under normal riding and will give 250+ miles in a tank, which I haven't seen since I sold my GL1100 (and only occasionally at that).
