HJC Symax 2 Helmet With Inner Tint Shield First Impression

April 3, 2008 - 05:26 PM

Newest HJC Symax 2 Helmet Up Close

Besides our popular Nolan N102N-Com Flip Style Full Face, this new HJC Symax 2 helmet is now in stock. After riding with it complete with a J&M headset, we added it to our favorites list along with the Nolan N102N-com. We really liked the fact that this newly designed HJC Symax2 is headset friendly in design. Installing a Gold Wing Helmet Headset or any other type of communications is no problem if you ever need to. Sizing, Symax 2 Helmets seem to run small in sizing similar to how Arai helmets run, keep that in mind when choosing your size, you may need to order larger. Coolest thing besides great comfort and fit, is the retractable Inner Tint Shield inside this helmet, very nice..

New Inner Tint Retractable Shield

Inner Tint Shield deploys downward from inside helmet by simply sliding the Tab forward located on top of the helmet.. Slide the tab on top one click forward for position # 1 and one more click forward to it's full down position. To retract, simply push the button on top and it springs back into the helmet shell via a spring loaded inner mechanism. No need to wear sunglasses with this helmet, this Internal Tint Shield works nicely..

Helmet Fitment and Comfort

The helmet feels like it sits lower than the original Symax, which is a good thing, this allows for a better fit. One of the big selling points of modular helmets is that they work better for motorcycle riders who wear eyeglasses. I can second that being I also wear glasses and it is much easier to get off and On. The nice thing is it offers front face protection, and anytime you want to fip the front up simply push up on the button located in the center below the chin with your thumb. To close simply pull the front and it locks back into place.

The Symax 2 helmet liner is very soft and allows for far better air flow ventilation compared to the older version. The new liner is soft and nicely perforated to keep air moving when the outside vents are opened in warmer weather. Symax 2 Helmets seem to run small in sizing similar to how Arai helmets fit. Because they run small in sizing, keep that in mind when choosing your size. Your helmet should fit snug, it will loosen after it breaks in and conforms to the shape of your head. Sizing does seem to run similar to full face Arai helmets.

Air Flow Ventilation and Noise Level

The Smax 2 helmet is provided with a chin curtain under the chin bar, after riding with the helmet it seems to help lower the wind noise that might otherwise come from that area. This is great for Goldwing helmet headset applications compared to an open face helmet by reducing overall wind noise being a full face design, especially for the passenger who tends to get more wind on the back. Overall we felt this helmet performed very well while using our J&M # HSECD584FL headset that was pre-installed here at Wingstuff. After installing the headset we went riding for the afternoon on our favorite canyon roads and later on the freeway at highway speeds.

Overall, this helmet performed very well, we liked this Sxmax 2 helmet and also like the Nolan N102N-com. Both are great helmets whether you ride with a headset on your Goldwing or cruise without one on your Harley. The Inner Tint Shield is a very nice feature on the Symax2, in comparison Nolan does the same, except their Tint Shield is external on the outside of the helmet separate from the main shield. It's just preference, both helmets are very nice and either way, you can't go wrong by choosing either one.

Goldwing Headset  Recommendations

We recommend using J&M helmet headsets, the quality of sound from the J&M 277FL or 584FL headsets are beyond any other headset we have tested. These helmet headsets both have very thin boom microphones that fit inside standard full face as well as flip-up front full face helmets.

Having a smaller microphone means you are able to flip the front of the helmet up and down without the headset boom ever getting in the way. The letters "FL" at the end of the HSBCD277 or HSECD584 J&M headsets indicates the speakers don't have the rubber tubes, thus allowing either of these headsets to easily fit inside the air pockets of regular full face or flip-up style full face helmets.

If your looking at purchasing a flip style full face helmet, consider the HJC Sxmax 2, it appears to be a real winner..

Thanks for this post, we've been thinking about upgrading to flip up full face helmets because we like the idea of front face protection. We found a local shop that had a few and we tried them on, I'm a vip member and will definately order from wingstuff due to the high price my local dealer wants for it compared to the low you sell it for here on wingstuff. I agree it was very comfortable and the inner tint shield sold me on this helmet, the first thing my wife said was wow, I really like this inside shield, as you say in this post just slide the lever forward on top of the helmet to lower the shield and by pushing the release button on top the shield quickly snapped back up into the helmet shell. We really like this helmet, we will order soon. Thanks Guys, John - New York

I am also interesed in the full face protection. How hard is it to replace the retractable shield? If anyone has seen "Wild Hogs" you already know about the impact of stones, bugs and birds? can have on a shield.

wingman522's wife says she tried on the Symax2 and even with a XXL, and my head isn't that big, I couldn't get it on and off with my glasses on or without about ripping my post earrings out of my head. We were very disappointed!

My wife and I currently ride with the original Symax and both have the same complaint, fit. After several minutes in the helmet we notice an uncomfortable pressure on the forehead and after an hour or two its almost unbearable. I believe its due to the helmet shape. Has any change been made to the shape of the shell that would improve the fit for those of us not blessed with "round" heads? We both like the new versions retractable shield. No more swapping faceshields at dusk or squeezing sunglasses on.

I can't wait to try it. I've always had open faced helmets, but want the added protection of fullface.

I have ordered and received my Symax 2 helmet. It appears to be everything that Wingstuffs' president recommends. The retractable shield is the best feature and the reason we purchased it. My only question is can the shield be replaced by the user? I also feel that the lower cord for the driver is a bit short. I'm also unable to put the helment on with my glasses on. For this reason I would recommend 4 stars.
